Winger Mayer selected for Team B.C.

It’s a goal 13-year-old Alena Mayer had her sights set on this past winter while competing at the B.C. Winter Games in Terrace — being selected to play hockey for Team B.C. to compete nationally.
Mayer, who attends Williams Lake Secondary School, was selected as just a handful of players from her North-East Zone team at the B.C. Winter Games.
“It was a fun tournament,” she said of the B.C. Winter Games. “We finished seventh, but it was something to remember.”
Mayer, a left winger on the ice, was notified of being selected to play for Team B.C. by the manager of her North-East zone team, and is now preparing for a series of tournaments with her new teammates.
“We’re going to be training a lot,” she said.
“We all go down once a month to Vancouver for a weekend and we practice about two hours a day.”
The practices are in preparation for a series of tournaments beginning this weekend, April 1-4, in Burnaby.
Then in May, Mayer’s team travels to Saskatoon to play in another tournament. Following that, in June, the team will play its final tournament in Winnipeg.
Team B.C. is being coached by Len Kawamoto, who led last year’s squad to a first-place finish throughout the series of tournaments.
“I’m just looking forward to the experience and to see how good all the hockey players are,” Mayer says.
“And, I want to see how good you have to be to play at that level and maybe get higher than that myself.”
